Greg LaRock
Plansoen Shadows
12 x 20, oil on linen
This painting by Greg LaRock from Newport Beach, CA won the 2008 Plein Air–Easton! Grand Prize. It depicts Plansoen Farm, once part of the great silk speculation that swept Talbot County in the 1830s. The mansard roofed farmhouse is a rare survivor of a popular style in Easton architecture after the arrival of rails. This scenic landmark was included on the 2008 Plein Air–Easton! “Vanishing Landscapes” registry (and corresponding artist award). Earlier this year, the Plansoen farmhouse did indeed “vanish” as it was relocated to the outskirts of town in hopes of future restoration.
During the week of July 20-26, 2009, LaRock will join more than 50 other artists from across the country as they descend on Easton and Talbot County to paint picturesque landscapes, breathtaking sunsets, and colonial era streetscapes along miles of Chesapeake waterfront during the 5th Annual Plein Air–Easton! Competition & Arts Festival. Artists, collectors, and art enthusiasts alike have discovered this event, which is producing some of the best representational art in America today. The festival features a national competition, museum exhibit and sales of freshly made paintings, exclusive Collectors’ Preview Party, two hour Quick Draw competition followed by art exhibit and sale, gallery shows, Winners’ Paint-Out & Brunch with live art auction. A full compliment of lectures, demos, and master classes, along with tours of local artist’s studios, photography contest, live music, outdoor Shakespeare theatre, and more, combine to make this the East Coast’s premier plein air festival. Most events are free and open to the public.
