Early Birds by Stewart White - 2009 Plein Air–Easton! Grand Prize winner

Stewart White
Early Birds
11" x 14", watercolor

This painting by Stewart White from Baltimore won the 2009 Plein Air–Easton! Grand Prize . It depicts a working granary in the heart of downtown Easton, along what was once the railroad line. Although the railroad no longer runs through town, these granaries are still used as storage for grain, primarily by the Eastern Shore’s huge poultry industry. This rustic landmark was included on the 2009 Plein Air–Easton! “Vanishing Landscapes” registry, which is accompanied by a corresponding artist award.

During the week of July 19-25, White will join 57 other artists from across the country as they descend on Easton and Talbot County to paint picturesque landscapes, breathtaking sunsets, and colonial era streetscapes along miles of Chesapeake waterfront during the 6th Annual Plein Air–Easton! Competition & Arts Festival. Artists, collectors, and art enthusiasts alike have discovered this event, which is producing some of the best representational art in America today. Plein Air–Easton! features a national competition, museum exhibit and sales of freshly made paintings, exclusive Collectors’ Preview Party, Winners’ Paint-Out & Brunch with live art auction, two-hour Quick Draw competition followed by art exhibit and sale, and gallery shows. A second paint-out, Quick Draw: The Next Generation, has been created especially for emerging artists age 21 and younger.

A full complement of lectures, demos, and master classes, along with tours of local artists' studios, photography contest, films, and live entertainment combine to make this the East Coast’s premier plein air festival. Most events are free and open to the public.
