Jean Hirons
Autumn Barns
pastel, 14" x 17"
Waverly Street Gallery is pleased to present the pastel paintings of award-winning member Jean Hirons. The show features a collection of lush landscapes that explore the beauty of man’s creations within their natural setting. Hirons’ subject matter ranges from the Maryland countryside and coastal Massachusetts to the West and British Isles. While there are a number of pure landscapes, many others feature houses, boats, or other structures that speak of the gentle presence of man. This is a celebration of the harmony that can be found when buildings suit the landscape.
A New Englander by birth, Hirons regularly returns to the Massachusetts coast to paint and visit family. She has a life-long love of the architecture of New England and a belief that houses and barns should fit into the landscape, rather than dominate it. Whether painted en plein air or in the studio, Hirons' paintings contrast the strength of constructed form with the flow of natural elements.
Hirons uses the versatility of soft pastel to create both dynamic and quiet images. A signature member of the Pastel Society of America and current president of the Maryland Pastel Society, Hirons is also an adjunct professor at Montgomery College, Rockville Campus. Her pastels have won many awards, most recently the “Outstanding Landscape” award at the 4th Northeast Pastel Society National Exhibition. Her work can be viewed at: www.jeanhirons.com.
October 7-November 8, 2008. Reception: Oct. 10, 6-9 pm.
