Caio Fonseca
Quintena
color sugarlift and spitbite aquatint etching
38" x 29 1/2"
Caio Fonseca’s intaglio prints have been described as lyrical in
nature, offering a distinctive sense of balance & harmony.
Capturing the depth and range of Fonseca’s larger body of work,
including paintings on canvas and paper, his etchings combine
the fluid shapes and dynamic color of the artist’s paintings
inspired by classical music. Trained as a classical pianist,
Fonseca’s musicality and art are inexorably linked, as he seems
to draw upon the inspiration of Bach and Mozart to make
individual notes and movements visible and alive upon his
canvas.
Caio Fonseca was born in 1959, and raised in New York City.
Since 1985, he has maintained a studio in Pietrasanta, Italy,
and today divides his studio time between Tuscany and New York
City. This retrospective of the artist’s etchings will include
works from 1998 to the present.
