Lee Newman
Jack, the Educator
etching and watercolor, 11” x 10”
Using toys picked up from all areas of his house, Lee Newman has
been working for the past year to create a series of etchings on
zinc that deal with the themes of play and movement. The
artist’s use of arcs and ovals in his compositions reflects the
circuitous path that toys make from floor to shelf and back on a
daily basis.
While many of the toys depicted are classics such as tops and
yo-yo’s, others are of the contemporary variety found in Happy
Meals.
Lee Newman studied painting and printmaking at the Academy of
Fine Art in Vienna, Austria on a Fulbright Grant. It was in
Vienna that he learned to appreciate good coffee and to consume
only the very best beer.
Mr. Newman’s work is featured at Washington Printmaker’s Gallery
this month. In January the gallery will exhibit the richly
colored prints of New York artist Clare Romano.
